This project was meant as a Christmas present for my mom. She loved the ocean so I knew I wanted to do something with that. I started with the waves and used a paper towel with the acrylic paint in order to create the texture of the waves. Looking back on the project I should have started with the sand and continued from there, but everything worked out in the end. I used the same method for the sand as I used for the waves to create more texture. To build further, I drew the starfish first and then mixed the paint for them and filled them in. To attempt to create some sort of depth, I added a small drop shadow to some parts of the starfish and then added the lighter color dots to make them look more realistic than just plain. Although my teacher wanted me to go further with the drop shadow, I was scared that I would mess something up so I decided to just leave it at that and in the end I was happy with the way the piece turned out. I tried new things like adding texture and attempting a drop shadow and I worked collaboratively with my classmates through each step of this piece as I value their input. Although I used reference photos for the starfish, this piece is full of originality and I'm really happy with all the choices that I decided to make regarding the final outcome of the piece.
